Arturo Pérez-Reverte recrea en esta breve narración uno de los episodios más dramáticos de la conquista de México: la llamada «Noche Triste». En su retirada, los soldados españoles, castigados por la lluvia, avanzando por los puentes y entre el barro, debieron elegir entre el botín o la vida; abandonar el lastre de oro y riquezas que tantos peligros, sudor y sangre había costado era su única posibilidad de escapar.

On the evening of June 30th, 1520, in the outskirts of Tenochtitlán, Mexico suffered the greatest tragedy at the hands of Hernán Cortés during its conquest.
The Aztecs taste and relish their next revenge, while the Spaniards are ready to flee under the rain leaving behind the promise of gold for which they crossed the ocean; they must choose, to either take the loot for which so many fought and died for, or flee and save their own lives.
But, it’s not easy leaving behind the hope of a better future. While fighting for his life, a blue-eyed soldier is not willing to drop the sack full of precious metal; as he dreams of what could be, he fights on while carring gold bag filled with the weight of his future.
